Semester Study Abroad

Immerse yourself in Renaissance culture and creative practice

Semester of Study at FSFA

A semester at FSFA invites students into a continuum of learning shaped by history, material practice, and place. Studying abroad for a semester allows students to step into an environment where ideas are formed through observation, making, conversation, and time spent living within a city that has shaped centuries of artists and thinkers.

Set in Florence, FSFA's semester program is grounded in the belief that education happens as much through daily encounters as it does in the classroom. The city itself becomes a site of study—its streets, workshops, archives, and institutions offering context that deepens academic inquiry.

FSFA's faculty and staff support students not by insulating them from the unfamiliar, but by helping them learn how to navigate it thoughtfully. Through guidance, structure, and community, students are encouraged to develop independence while forming meaningful connections to place and to one another.

Program Overview

FSFA offers American university–level undergraduate courses rooted in close observation, critical thinking, and sustained engagement. All courses are taught in English, with the exception of Italian language instruction. Students may enroll for one semester or extend their studies across multiple terms.

Fall and Spring Semesters

Each semester balances structured coursework with experiential learning, allowing students to engage deeply without rushing—making time for reflection, revision, and growth.

Fall Semester

September – December

15-16 Credits • 4 Months • All Levels

Experience autumn in Tuscany. Smaller crowds, harvest season, perfect for deep artistic focus and Renaissance art immersion. Study traditional techniques in fresco, oil painting, and sculpture while exploring the birthplace of the Renaissance.

Spring Semester

January – May

15-16 Credits • 5 Months • All Levels

Florence blooms in spring. Extended daylight, festivals, and perfect weather for studio work and Tuscan exploration. Engage with local artists, participate in gallery shows, and develop your portfolio in one of the most inspiring art capitals.

Classroom Structure & Instruction

Academic Lecture Classes

Lecture courses meet twice weekly and integrate classroom discussion with on-site study throughout Florence. Rather than treating the city as background, these courses use place as a primary text. Readings and writing assignments emphasize analysis, interpretation, and historical awareness, with expectations for sustained work outside of class.

Studio Classes

Studio courses meet twice weekly and center on hands-on practice. Instruction combines demonstrations, visual analysis, and guided studio work, alongside visits to workshops, museums, and exhibitions. Critique—both individual and collective—is an essential component, reinforcing the idea that learning emerges through process, dialogue, and revision.
